A Screw Loose…

…is not a good thing on cycle cleats.

Today we went for a great ride in Suffolk.  I layered up (top tip – old moth eaten jumpers make for great cycling layers!), made sure I had on neoprene cycle booties (this is another foot saving tip for cold weather), and we set off.  On our ride back, I noticed my foot position was not correct.  I sighed and said to myself “I really need to sort out my cycle cleats this year, I would love ones that fit my custom orthotics to help with my right foot tendinitis. And I think these Specialized cleats are not doing me any good.”

I love cycling clipped in.  It makes hills easier.  I feel at one with my bike.

But I hate cycling clipped in when a screw falls off.  It makes clipping out impossible.

And I knew, when my foot position was not right, that I had a screw loose.

I slowed down, unclipped my left foot, tried to release my right, but just couldn’t.  Queue toppling over.  Not a problem, no big deal.  Just so frustrating.  And then to cycle the final 7 miles home without clipping in, on an undulating road?  Just not fun… (ok it was still fun to be cycling, but not as much fun!)

If anyone has any recommendations on cycle shoes that will work on very high arched feet, that will not allow me to supinate, that will be more relaible than these SPDs…  Let me know.
