Time flies – and I’m hoping the miles do too!

What has happened to time?  One second it was the last Monday in April, now I see it is already the first Wednesday in May.

I think the way time slipped by over the last week was caused by a few things.  First, we spent the long weekend in Suffolk – and did not have mobile phone access or email.  Wow.  It has been AGES since I was without connectivity for a whole weekend. It felt like I was in a time warp.  I also seem to have captured the little throat bug that has been going around the UK.  That also has distorted my sense of time (and lowered my energy levels).

I woke up this morning wondering how on earth it was already Wednesday the 5th of May.  Cinco de Mayo.  No tequila on the cards for me today though.  Today is my first event in a double event week.

I am taking deep breaths and wondering how on earth this week has arrived so quickly.  Actually, I am wondering when on earth I signed up for this week – it must have been in a high energy moment!

This is the week when I add a mid-week event, and the week that I test my physical resiliance with a 100km cycle on Sunday.

I’m not feeling well and I have been plagued with self doubt.  I spent Monday in a state of near dread and almost panic, as I wondered if I was going to be able to get to 10km running by August as I had dropped training sessions last week in a fit of work imbalance.  But I’m putting all my doubts aside.  I’m just going to follow my plans, trust my body (this is a large step for me as someone who has not exactly lived a life full of physical ability), and I’m just going to go for it and see what happens.

Today, May 5th, I am doing the Tower Jog.  This event is run by the British Heart Foundation and is designed to enable anyone to participate.  The Tower of London moat is opened up and makes a 1 kilometre circuit, and event participants can do as few or as many laps of the moat (up to 10km) as they wish.  My plan is to do 3 without stopping, then to add in an additional 1 or 2 depending on how I feel.  I think it is a good test of how I am doing with running, and it also slots nicely into my training as I up the ante and add run sessions to ensure I can get to 10km by August.

On Sunday, May 9th, I am doing the Suffolk Sunrise 100km cycle ride for Action Medical Research .  Sunday will be my first ever attempt at more than 45km on a cycle.  On roads I do not know, on a terrain that everyone says is flat but which I know is actually more like constant gentle rolling land.  Time is not a goal – the goal is to get out and do it.  I fully expect a sore pelvic bone.  But I have good cycle shorts and Chamois Butt’r, and determination.  I am as ready as I am going to be and ready to see what 100km on the cycle feels like.

These two events are all a part of my road to get ready for my “A-race” – the Olympic distance London Triathlon on August 8th.

I am doing all of my training, all of my events, and focusing all of my fundraising efforts for 2010 on the Charcot Marie Tooth Association ‘s STAR initiative – the initiative to find a cure for CMT1A.  CMT1A is a progressive degenerative nerve disease.  Basically, from the ends of the nerves up to the core, a build up of myelin protein inhibits the proper functioning and transmission of nerve signals – leading to a loss in motor function and sensation.  People with CMT1A have varying degrees of impact from the disease – I am lucky as its impact on me is rather mild, for now.  But CMT1A is progressive.  Its course is unknown.  It impacts 1 in 5000 people differently.  Thanks to the efforts of the CMT1A there is a search for drug treatments which may help.

If you would like to support me in my quest for the cure, please feel free to click through and donate here .  Or you can send me an email to .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) or you can comment on my blog.  Or link with me on Twitter and follow me and tweet with me along the way.  Every little bit – both financial and the encouragement – helps.

Thank you for all of your support.  Next Monday’s blog is sure to be an interesting one – with two events to write about!  Let’s hope the time flies quickly between now and then – and let’s hope for sunshine and decent weather too!

  1. Thanks Maria! One down, one to go. Last night was fun, and all to plan (except for a super high heart rate that I guess comes from being kind of sick)…  Let’s hope Sunday is fun as well!
