Friday Thought: On Managing Wellness

Since my last post, I’ve…

…travelled to Tuscany, Croatia, Marseille, Paris, and Stavenger…

…swum 40 kilometres in one week…

…finished one of my dream swim races, the Defi Monte Cristo 5k challenge in Marseille…

…missed one of my goal races for 2015, the Arctic One paratriathlon at Dorney Lake…

AND…

I’ve submitted my name in the start list process for the ITU Open Paratriathlon World Championship race… Squee!

Today I was thinking… Not so many years ago I would not have dreamed of doing ANY of this stuff. I would have been happy going to work, going out with friends, and only occasionally going to the gym – mostly driven by women’s magazines and the latest “get fit” notions I would be reading. When I changed my focus to my health and managing for my wellness ALL YEAR LONG back in 2009, it was a decision that brought with it unexpected benefits. Probably the biggest of these were CONFIDENCE and SELF BELIEF.

The road to feeling confident in my self and in my body has been long, and not without twists, turns, heartache and (of course) elation.

By getting on that road, I have learned so much about myself. I am a better me, thanks to committing to a multisport lifestyle, thanks to committing to take care of myself.

And thanks to that commitment I made six years ago, I was able to get on this road – a small windy hilly path carved through the Tuscan hillside. In early June, I walked for 14 kilometres, stable and strong. A walk that would not have given me pause for thought years ago, but that today I treasure, knowing that I have a progressive degenerative neuromuscular disease. A walk that was my personal celebration to wellness.

If you are thinking about embracing wellness, what are you waiting for? Have courage, take your first steps, and start walking on the road. You never know where it will lead…
